The all plastic Redmond E-Z Open pouch opens instantly when its flap is turned up. It represents a significant breakthrough in pouch design and turns using pouches from a messy annoyance to a pleasant and neat little experience.
They cost roughly one third to one half that of the foil based pouches depending on barrier requirements. Typically a 9 to 10 gm ketchup pouch with 9 months plus shelf life has a material cost of about .125 cents in HDPE/EVOH/HDPE compared to .275 cents in foil. Size range is virtually unlimited.
E-Z Open pouches can be manufactured on special Redmond developed vertical form-fill-seal pouch machines. Various fluid products may be dispensed directly into the mouth. They are ideal for confections as well as cough syrup and other medications requiring controlled dosage, particularly for young children.
Redmond E-Z Open pouches have a built in system for valving and controlling
the rate of flow of product when dispensing it. They can be made so that
they will not leak or drip after opening and will only dispense product when
pressurized by squeezing. After dispensing a portion of the contents,
release of the pressure will stop the flow and they will remain dripless.
This unique feature makes them ideal candidates for products and uses never
before considered for pouches.
Alcohol based beverages can be directly squeezed into the mouth or into a
glass. Liquid seasonings such as Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, vanilla,
prepared lemon juice, vinegar, etc. can be added to recipes etc. at various
times during their preparation. Valving means that the pouch is not really
open when the flap is initially folded back and is only open when the pouch
is under pressure. When that pressure is relieved the valve closes and
therefore partially used packages may be stored for subsequent use, under
refrigeration if necessary.
For non-food products such as laundry detergents E-Z Open pouches offer the
homemaker relief from lugging around 8 or 10 lbs. of detergent, unscrewing a
cap and pouring the product into a measuring cup and then into the wash.
Instead an E-Z Open pouch allows absolute control of the amount of product
used. For example, a standard full load of wash uses approximately 3 oz. of
detergent. If the 3 oz. of detergent is contained in a single valved E-Z
Open pouch and a smaller wash is begun then a portion of that pouch can be
dispensed into the wash and the rest retained for use at a later time.
Measurement lines may be printed on the pouch so that the user could know how
much product they're using.
Since the large plastic containers of detergent weigh in at over 8 oz. of
plastic and 32, 3 oz. E-Z Open pouches only require 2 to 3 oz. of plastic the
environmental and cost benefits are very significant, shipping and handling
costs are reduced. Profits will rise and still allow price reduction and
convenience to the consumer.
For liquid medications requiring dose control, nothing could be simpler than
having an E-Z Open pouch containing the dose (1 teaspoon, 10 mls., 1
tablespoon etc.) which may be directly squeezed and sucked into the mouth
(ideal for small children).
